More on Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein is one of the original states of the Federal Republic. Its borders on Denmark to the north, and with Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to the south.

Schleswig and Holstein has through history belonged in part or in its entirety to either Denmark or Germany, with occasions when it was independent of either. In 1721, the whole of Schleswig was under the rule of the kings of Denmark. However, there was a strong feeling of German national awakening in Schleswig and Holstein following the Napoleonic Wars, while at the same time, there was a Danish national awakening in northern Schleswig.

When King Frederick VII of Denmark died in 1863 without leaving an heir, the pro-German branch of the Danish royal family demanded the crowns of both Schleswig and Holstein. Within the same year, Prussia and Austria declared war on Denmark, which saw the defeat of the Danes, and resulting in Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg being made part of Prussia and Austria. The province of Schleswig-Holstein was formed.

At the end of Second World War, Schleswig-Holstein came under British occupation. Then on 23 August, 1946, it was made one of the states (or Land) of the Federal Republic of Germany.
